Something is making this site slow ..

Wednesday February 20th, 2008 at 6:00 pm

and its driving me nuts. I’m trying to narrow it down, thinking it was the theme, but changing the theme hasn’t seemed to make a difference .. now I’m thinking its either the images I have linked from flickr, or the embedded youtube video, neither of which should matter, but it seems that it does. The back end of the site loads super fast .. so it has to be something on the front :(

In other news, if everything goes as it should, I could be substituting as early as next week! I know I said it would take 3 weeks after my last post, but when I went to turn my application in, the woman told me I could schedule my interview without waiting the 2 weeks! Most likely its because I have previous experience. Anyways, yesterday I had my interview and drug screening, which both went well. So 1 week from yesterday I can find out if I’m clear and ready to teach.

In the photography business, I’ve started to publish my recent ’shoots’ on a blog that’s linked to my photo site (email me for URLs, I dont want photo clients finding this blog). It was kinda neat to revisit my sessions of the past year, and see my favorites. Putting that together also helped me book my first wedding .. score!

Tonight I’m reviving sewing Wednesday, even if it is just me sewing alone :) I have some new fabric and want to put together a few aprons to sell online, and I have 24 zippers on their way for my ‘purse pockets’ .. so I can start figuring out a pattern for that and cutting up the cute fabric I got for them :) Link to that site is coming soon!

Happy Valentine’s Day!

Hope everybody had a nice day today :) I happened to pick up the ugliest pack of sweethearts ever, and they didn’t have 1 ‘Be Mine’ in the entire pack! Anyways, that explains the silly picture above. We’re taking it easy and hanging out today. I picked up a pizza and makings for ice cream sundaes for dessert (including cookie dough for some fresh baked cookie bits, I can’t wait to dig in!) The pups each got a new toy, one happened to be a pink lambswool toy that I figured would be Daisy’s .. but for some reason Big Boy has attached himself to the pink thing, rather then choosing the more manly one. oh well, whatever he wants :) Well he just brought it up here to snuggle with it on my lap, he’s too cute :) Have a lovely evening!!

On this day: Halle is here!!, Valentine's Day Tortilla Soup

One step closer

Wednesday February 13th, 2008 at 7:19 pm

Today I went to a substitute orientation class to become a sub in this county. The county requires this class for everybody, before they’ll even look at your application, so its pretty annoying that I couldn’t get into the class until May (when I requested a date in Jan). Anyways, after bugging the coordinator he told me that I could show up to the class in Feb early and put myself on the wait list and hope that I’d get in. So this morning I got up at 5:30am (after going to sleep after 12:30am because of the stupid storms), got out the door at 6:30 and drove my butt to the class which was 45 min away. I got there right at 7:30 (had a few stops for gas and a money order) and quickly realized I may have been too late. There were at least 20 other people there to get on the wait list! I couldn’t believe it! Usually only 4-6 people make it from the wait list to the class (which holds only 40), so I was pretty disappointed and already planning my 7am arrival for the next class in 2 weeks. But by some sort of miracle only 10 registered people showed up before the 8am start time, and by that time the wait list had grown to over 30, and we ALL made it into the class. The instructor said he’s never had a class like that ever. On top of that, at least 10 registered people showed up late, he turned a few away, but a few others gave him such sob stories, or wouldn’t accept “get out you’re late” as an answer and stubbornly stayed in the class. Pretty crazy that people like that expect to be teachers.

Overall eventhough this class was annoying to get into, it was very informative, and I feel much more prepared then I was after my Broward sub. orientation 6 years ago. Tomorrow I have to make the trip back to turn in my application & get finger printed .. then 2 weeks after that I can find out if I passed my background test and go for an interview at my ‘home school’, who will present me with my drug screen paperwork. The drug screen takes 5 business days to get back .. then I’ll be cleared to work! So 3 weeks if everything goes as it should, I should be teaching again, woo hoo!

Its pretty crazy how inspired I got while in the class while talking about teaching methods. Its weird to remember that I once really enjoyed teaching and actually majored in it for a semester. Then we also discussed how to handle behaviorial problems, and I remembered how I broke down in tears of exhaustion after teaching a wild 1st grade class, and I remembered a 2nd grader who threw his desk at me (he was emotionally disturbed, bad family setting, so sad) I’m really interested to see how I handle things this time around, being 6 years older, and experienced.

And now I’m exhausted, 5 hours of sleep just doesn’t work for me. To bed early tonight!

A fun weekend

Sunday February 10th, 2008 at 3:35 pm

This weekend Liz and Ella were in town for Annabelle & Halle’s birthday party. Friday night Halle and Nikki came over for dinner and some quality hangout time. The girls also tried on their aprons I made them. Ella got a kitchen for Christmas, and both Halle & Annabelle got kitchens for their birthdays, so they all needed aprons :) A picture of Halle’s is coming soon.

I’m considering making a few more and putting them up on my new Etsy account (thanks for the encouragement Keri) I’ll be sure to post here when and if I make any to sell :)

Friday night / Saturday morning we made these. They were soooo good! We ended up making the dough and rolling the rolls Friday night, then refrigerating them overnight. Saturday we took them out and let them warm up and rise for an hour before baking them. The only changes we made to the recipe was to double the vanilla in the frosting, and baked at 350 for almost 45 minutes (might have been a little too long).

Saturday was party day. We were up bright and early enjoying our cinnabuns :) Ella had a blast on the playground, going down the slides. What’s really cool is that apparently when you reserve the pavillion at this park, they include free skate rental, and they have an outdoor skating rink! It was pretty neat to get a bunch of the adults in old school skates. I actually did it, and after about 8 times around, I realized how old and out of shape I was, my back was killing me from trying to keep my balance :P The party was a big success and you can check out some pictures here.

This morning we got Ella into the studio for a few shots before Liz and Ella headed home. I just had to share one of my favorites.

I’m beginning to understand

Tuesday February 5th, 2008 at 11:00 pm

how the word ‘bitch’ developed its negative connotation. Tonight I gave the dogs some rawhide bones that were left over from the Christmas card photoshoot to keep them quiet while I folded laundry. Daisy grabbed hers first, and was so cute how carefully she angled her bone out the sliding bedroom door onto our porch. After an hour of chewing, Big Boy got bored of his bone and decided to take a look at what Daisy was doing. As soon as he stuck his head out the door to the porch, I heard her growl. That sooo doesn’t fly in this house so I took both bones away and put them back on top of the fridge.

Not even 5 minutes after I did that, Daisy walked across the (carpeted) bedroom floor and squatted right infront of me! This dog hasn’t had an indoor accident in at least a month! I kept telling her ‘outside’ ‘outside’, thinking she’d stop and run out the door realizing what she was doing, but she just stared at me, giving me ‘the look’. The door had been open, not even 15 feet away from her chosen spot. When she had finished (and I swear it was the longest pee I’ve ever seen her take) she ran out the door while I cleaned up her mess.

After I finished cleaning up after her, she had started a fight with Big Boy by the front door. So

OMFG!!! As I type this she was crying hysterically because I wont let her out of the bedroom, so I let her up on the bed, yes .. she just peed on a blanket that happened to be here because I just washed it! She is such a BITCH!!

Anyways, back to the front door .. yes poop. I have no idea who really did it, but of course I have my suspicion.

Real quick .. dont get me wrong, I love these guys .. and 90% of my day they’re adorable. They’ve been really good with going outside to go to the bathroom, and have only had a couple accidents in the past month (usually because we ignore their bell because we just think they want attention, so its our fault). Big Boy has really been a sweetheart lately, he’s become quite the lapdog. He loves to be carried around, and will sit at your feet and do his little hop (just hopping with his 2 front paws, so cute) until you pick him up. He’s started to cry at my feet whenever I’m at my desk, just to curl up in my lap while I work. Daisy has claimed my office futon as her dog bed, and usually spends her afternoons stretched across it watching me work. Alright, gotta go throw that blanket back into the wash.

Note to self..

The gym closes at 7pm on Saturday and 5:30 on Sunday.

I *almost* made it to the gym 3 times this week .. but instead I went grocery shopping and made fried rice with brown rice, chicken and lots of veggies.
