but there’s a phone in your house and its ringing …

WTF .. seriously?!? 3am?? It rings 6 or so times and I see the light in the kitchen go on so I assume Sean picked it up. I get up to use the bathroom, and I hear it ringing again, this time only once or twice .. so now I’m sure Sean got it. So I go out to see what all the fuss is about and he hadn’t answered it. Its our business line, and the caller ID is unknown. Of course now I’m awake, so I come online to check the voicemail. No voicemail was left, but there was a number associated with the call. So of course I google the number and I find [this link]. How freakin’ annoying. I found another blog entry where somebody spent 3 hours talking to her phone company, do not call and their local police and they got nothing resolved. So I’m just hoping that our phone doesn’t ring again.

So here’s my 3rd night in a row when I’m wide awake in the middle of the night, and actually the 4th in the past 5 nights. Monday night it was website stuff keeping me up, Tuesday it was the thought of maybe being to catch my families robber if they only signed online with my sister’s screenname. Tonight, a 3am phone call. Unfortunately after the first 2 days my mind is pretty used to being awake this time of night, but lucky for me, ABC has a news program called ABC World News Now that’s pretty entertaining. I guess they dont expect too many people to be watching this time of day, so the reporters are relaxed, quirky, chipper and surprisingly fun for 3am news. Like the story right now is about ‘bro-mance‘ .. pretty funny.

[UPDATE - 4am] Mystery solved .. I just received an email from Dell, at 3:09 am this morning, that they were faxing a copy of an invoice of the stolen computer to our business line rather then our fax line .. oops I put in the wrong number.

Next time you buy something major, like say, an ipod or computer .. and they ask you “Debit or credit?” pick credit. It makes it alot easier for them to find your receipt if your purchase is stolen. Better yet, if you know exactly what you want .. order it online and pick it up at the store, then you can pull your receipt from home with just your email address! Circuit City and Amazon.com are awesome with their order records. I’ve been able to find the records of all my gift purchases that were taken from my family. Best Buy I ran into a snag because I used a debit card, but they finally found the purchase using my phone number (eventhough the 1st rep. I spoke to couldn’t find it that way, a 2nd one did). Of course it also helps that I use QuickBooks & Quicken to manage my finances .. so I could find exact dates, which cards/accounts I used and the amounts of the purchases, and I even had a few receipts filed. 

Anyways I hope nobody I know ever has to go through this .. but if you do, using credit could help you out. Although if you’re worried about big brother .. debit records are only held for about a year I think, maybe less.

My family was robbed today I really don’t have any details other then they took the big TV, Liz’s laptop, Mom & Dad’s ipods & all the cameras (including Liz’s good one). They don’t even know how they got in. Everybody is safe, nobody but Rocky was home (and he’s ok). The biggest loss right now seems to be Liz’s pictures and videos that were on the laptop (thank goodness for the kodak gallery membership, as they store the full res. photos), the rest is just stuff and they have insurance. I’ll post updates if they find anything.
