Archives for the month of: May, 2008

Yes I’m sick of this, as I’m sure all my neighbors are .. and I can’t imagine the frustration of the brave firefighters trying to save homes and get these fires under control.

Right now I’m watching 2 fires from the backyard. I’m pretty sure the fire to the north of us is less then 2 miles away. Probably close to one mile.

North Fire

And this is the latest shot of the fire west of us .. now .. the wind is blowing this away from us .. at least the smoke is blowing away from us.

West Fire

Here’s a closer shot, you can see definition in the smoke plumes.

West Fire

I turned our sprinklers on .. our grass has been dead for weeks .. I dont think it would help at all .. but at least it wont hurt. I haven’t seen any low flying helicopters for either of these fires .. though I have heard a couple ‘copters, but I think they’re news crews.

Little update on the dogs .. Big Pup has a stomach bug, or nerves .. he’s not acting nervous .. but his stomach is a wreck .. I really dont know what to do for him, as I dont think there’s such a thing as puppy pepto. If he’s still having problems this afternoon I’ll call the vet, but as she’s in Grant, on US1, she’s been really close to a few fires and I dont want to bother her.

West towards palm bay fire

Are you getting sick of this yet? I know I am .. That would be the west fire, or palm bay fire, or maybe the lowry fire .. or maybe something new ..

This mornings fire North of us seems to have calmed down.

Looking north

I just watched the latest News13 report .. they said fire fighters are focusing on fires that are close / really threatening homes .. rather then the brush fires in forests.

Well .. not really .. not when this is at the end of your street.

Panoramic View North to West

Here’s a view from the front of the house.

From front yard, looking north over Grant Rd.

Sean noticed it at 6am .. he even called 911 to see if we should leave (the dogs and I were asleep). The helicopters just showed up (around 7) hopefully it’ll be a quick one.

A little I’ve learned about evacuating .. apparently the fire dept will drive through neighborhoods when they want people to get out, and they will use reverse 911 (luckily we caved and bought a land line last year) .. so we’re not jumping in the car right now. But it’s still loaded since yesterday, and I might put the dog crates in right now, since they don’t use them for the rest of the day.
Oh .. and I guess I should get dressed :\

Palm Bay Fire

I risked my life and climbed up on my roof for these shots :) These are facing south .. the Palm Bay Fire(s) that are still burning.

Here are a few more pictures of the bigger flame.

Palm Bay Fire

I know this one is crooked .. but I still liked it. It was hard to hold the camera steady and there was no way I was going back down to get my tripod :(

Palm Bay Fire

I really don’t want to do much else then watch the smoke right now .. so how about a few more pictures.

Here’s the view from my office window. It faces south .. those would be the Palm Bay fires that have moved east.

Looking South from my office window

Here’s a shot of the clouds that have formed, they really look like rain clouds, though all the weather forecasters say there’s no possibility of rain. They could be from the Cocoa fire, but I doubt it because the wind isn’t blowing this way from Cocoa.

Looking North, big clouds

Here’s the ex-Palm Bay fire from the backyard.

Southwest of our house

Looking North from the back yard, yesterday there was a fire burning in that direction …

Looking North

Hey guys .. thanks for reading and keeping us in your thoughts!

Real clouds, not smoke .. could they possibly bring rain?

They’re seriously getting these fires under control, as soon as one starts up they’re on top of it. I went out to the grocery store and saw another flare up north of us .. but by the time i came back a half hour later, I couldn’t find any smoke! Now there’s a decent flame up south of us, but that’s downwind, and we’re not worried.

Looks like Cocoa has a really really bad one going on right now.

The helicopters stopped .. so I drove down there to see what was going on. One of the 2 fire trucks was moving onto another fire. I talked to one of the sheriffs there. He said the fire was done, for now .. and when I said I live down the street, he said ‘keep an eye on your house’. Yay.

This newest fire is less then a mile from our street, the wind is blowing mostly south and the fire is still north of us (but not much). The wind is predicted to eventually come from the east .. which would be terrible if they can’t stop this fire.

This is a terrible shot, that white truck pulled infront of the firetrucks .. but you can estimate where the commotion is. This was taken from the end of our dirt road.

View from our street Fire just beyond white truck

Here’s the fire at Hidden Lane .. if you know the area I was parked in front of Cypress Creek Subdivision

Across from Cypress Creek Subdivision

I’m not sure this is going to show up in the small version .. but if you look to the left of the stop sign pole .. there’s orange .. those are flames

Hidden Ln, Buckeye Ln

Wider shot .. facing south, south east across Grant Rd.

Hidden Ln, Buckeye Ln

Looking from the front yard .. seems much farther away.

From the front of the house

Here’s a helicopter ..

From the front of the house

Sean just came back in after watching the action for awhile .. he thinks things are under control. We’ll keep our eyes open as these fires have been changing so quickly.

Less then a mile east from us .. they have a helicopter, but only 2 fire trucks .. winds blow it this way .. I have pictures but I’m loading the car first.

We have fires / smoke plumes to the west, south and now east of us. The closest one is the new one that’s east of us, and that would be less then 2 miles away (since thats the dist from here to US-1), but the other 2 are at least 5 miles away, probably more. The good news for us is that the wind is blowing from the north to the south .. so we’re not really affected by the smoke too much, nor are we worried about it carrying anything this way. The North (Malabar) fire seems to be extinguished (thank goodness)

They’re predicting the wind to shift onshore eventually .. hopefully they’ll get that new fire that’s east of us under control before that. Of course they’re not even reporting about that fire yet .. so I have no idea if its really that small of a fire, or if the news just doesnt know about it yet. We’ve heard firetrucks .. so we know the fire dept knows about it.
