Please stop the fire

[UPDATE 5-12-08: 8am] I’ve been reading more detailed reports and it looks like the fires are definitely north of our house. And it looks like 95 and US1 are both open .. or parts of them are open, so we shouldn’t have a problem getting home when we get on the road. I found this article on Florida Today that has updates that seems to have the best info on status of the fire. [click here]

Please keep our house in your thoughts .. apparently there’s a huge brush fire in our area that has burned 1900 acres already. At this moment I95 is shut down from exit 173 to 156 (we live in between those 2 exits, about 4 miles east of 95). US-1 is closed south of malabar. So if we were to drive home right now we wouldn’t even be able to get to our house. There are 3 major north south roads that get down to us, the 3rd is Babcock, which actually crosses 95, so we’re sure that one is closed too.

We’re still in Orlando for the night, the winds are supposed to stay high until noon tomorrow, which is terrible to fight fires. And they aren’t predicting any improvement on wind or dry weather for days. They’re expecting this fire to spread all the way from 95 to US1 overnight. I believe that this fire is north of our house (close to malabar rd), but I really dont know for sure as Orlando news reporters really dont know our little area.

Some local news stations, most are calling our fire the ‘malabar’ fire.

Hello from Disney & Happy Mother’s Day

Disney '08

We’re spending a lovely Mother’s day with Mickey Mouse :) This morning we headed to Disney’s Hollywood Studios to check out the Playhouse Disney show & jump on a couple rides.

We’re taking it easy as its 90 + degrees here. Luckily there’s a strong wind that kept us cool this morning. We came back to the hotel to cool off and take afternoon naps. Later on this afternoon we’ll be heading back to Epcot for dinner and hopefully the Nemo ride at the old living seas.

I hope you all have a wonderful Mother’s Day, whether you’re a mother or not :)

Soft Chocolate Chip Cookies For Nik

Soft Chocolate Chip Cookies

Nikki’s only request from me while she was stuck in the hospital trying to hold in her baby this week were some soft chocolate chip cookies she could enjoy while she’s on bed rest. I actually only have crispy chocolate chip cookie recipes (’cause that’s how I like ‘em), so I searched allrecipes.com for a soft cookie recipe and found this highly rated one. I went through page after page of the comments, reading up on all the suggestions .. so at the bottom of this post you’ll find my modified version. I did the research so you don’t have to :)

Gifts for Nikki & Baby Elena

As some of you might have seen in my Flickr stream I finished up a bunch of projects for Nikki & baby Elena. I was worried she might show up this week so I had to get done before she got here. Luckily it looks like we have a little longer to wait before we get to meet Elena.

Here’s the finished diaper bag, which I had finished before Nik’s shower last month, but now the strap has been shortened to Nikki length :) [as always click the image for larger versions]

Then I made this matching changing pad. It has 3 pockets for diapers, wipes, creams, hand sanitizer .. rubber gloves .. anything you could possibly need to change a baby. The pad part even attaches by velcro so that you can throw that part in the wash :)

Here’s a peek at the goodies inside the bag.

I embroidered a couple burp cloths

and a few newborn onsies for Elena :)

I’m really happy with the way everything came out .. and the tiny onsies .. seriously adorable!!

A Little Update on Nikki

For those of you who happen to read my blog, but not Keri’s, Nikki went for her Dr. appt yesterday and discovered she was in preterm labor. She’s been at the hospital since yesterday morning to try to slow down her contractions to keep little Elena in for a bit longer (she’s just over 33 weeks). She’s on strict ‘do not move’ bedrest, on several medications that aren’t very fun, but she’s hanging in there.

Overnight her contractions slowed down to 1 or 2 per hour, but when I talked to her at 9 they were back up to 7 / hour. So she’s trying really really hard to stay still. Jason’s bringing her laptop over, but she’s not even thinking about trying to use it unless these contractions slow down.

Mystery Mound

When I let the dogs out this morning, they quickly sounded the alert over this lump.

Mystery Lump

I figured it was a turtle, but it also kinda looked like an old avocado, or maybe a giant dung beetle. But really.. how would either of those things find their way up next to our house :P Here’s my flip flop so you can see how small he was. Probably the size of my palm.

Then I went back inside to investigate what he could possibly be … and Sean let the dogs out again :( For fear of the puppies torturing the poor thing with their barking (and torturing us as well) I had Sean move the turtle out to a shady spot near the edge of our wetland. I took that opportunity to take a shot of his turtle bottom.

Using my super duper investigation tools (aka google images) .. I think I’ve figured out this is a Florida Striped Mud Turtle. [another link], scroll down to find the info :)

My birthday … chicken dogs?

For an explanation of the above picture .. please read about Keri’s Birthday Milk.

Not too much going on around here. My allergies have really been acting up for over a week now :( I take Zyrtec nightly and I’m not sure if its just not working because maybe I’ve built up a tolerance, or if the allergens in the air are just that bad right now. I’m probably going to make a trip to the pharmacy today to see if they can recommend anything.

Big Pup

How much do you love that face! Big Pup was just trying to get Daisy to chase him. She was sleeping, and didn’t want to play. So I tried to get a shot of him crouched down, trying to sneak up on her, or tempt her .. but being the camera hound that he is, he struck a pose as soon as he heard the camera focusing. These guys deserve a trip to the dog park this afternoon.

Long Key Nature Center

The center

Yesterday (Sunday) the girls went to the new Long Key Nature Center in Davie. Apparently a long long time ago .. all of Davie (and South Florida for that matter) was underwater, except for a small stretch of islands that the native americans named Long Key. Anyways .. what that means is .. there are giant oak trees that are 100s of years old in this area, which you just dont see everyday in South FL. In March they opened a giant nature center, and put some side walks together. We saw lots of different kinds of birds, lots of butterflies, a snake, turtles and Liz saw a gator last time she was there. Pictures are up on Flickr
