I’m putting my feet up for a little bit before I head out to Jason’s Birthday Bonfire so I figured I’d update you a little about my week. It was like my first really busy week in like months .. work-wise. Shoot I just realized I never blogged about my trip home last weekend .. maybe I’ll get to that over this weekend
Anyways .. Monday I actually programmed, which is huge for me. I’ve had a mental block for awhile when it comes to programming, I’m sure it all goes back to when I was fired over 3 years ago .. but whatever the deal is I just couldn’t focus enough to learn new skills. I started helping Drew with his super cool website back in June, Nikki did her part and I seriously slacked for months. Every few days I’d pull up all my code, and stare at it, not being able to make the first step work. Well I’m proud to say the site actually does something, finally. It may not do it right, or work all the time, and its full of bugs .. but its a start. And now Mike is excited to help .. now I feel like things are actually going to get moving on it.
The rest of this week I subbed. For 3 days I was in an ESE art class. The description on the job said ESE Language Arts, but it was just regular art. I really don’t like subbing for art classes, usually there’s not enough structure to enforce any sort of rules. Those of you who know about my ‘incident’ last year, that happened in an art class. Art class is supposed to be fun, you’re supposed to be able to talk to your friends and interact and bounce ideas off each other .. but with a sub, that escalates into shear madness in seconds flat in even the best of schools. Now .. add in the ESE (or exception ed) factor .. which is actually more like drop out prevention in this school, and its just pure chaos. You know you have a bad class when the CUSTODIAN is warning your sub about your class. The librarian said that all those students should be in jail, they’re all criminals. Little did I know she wasn’t kidding.
I actually think I managed the classes fairly well, there were no fights, some kids (actually the majority) did work, and usually I had things under control. Day 1 I only had 2 classes that I struggled with (out of 6), day 2 I only had 1 class with issues and by day 3 it was smooth sailing (of course I bribed them with candy the last day). I talked to alot of the kids trying to figure out why they were in this class and what their problems were. Most of them were over 15 years old (this was 7th & 8th grades), there was a 16 year old with a 5 month old, another girl who told me she had been held back 3 times in her life, pre-first, her mom died when she was in 3rd grade and then they tried to skip 4th grade but she was too far behind. Next week she’s moving to the ‘bad’ school for fighting and what not. The worst was a 17 year old who’s been at that school for 5 years (its a 2 year school), who kept telling me he’d rather be in jail then to draw in art class (he then did the assignment for me, but wouldn’t put his name on it) .. I ended up talking to the real teacher this morning who informed me that he’s been in jail a few times and is in this school as some sort of probation deal. So .. some of her kids really did belong in jail. I told her how I made it through the week and she actually gave me a hug she was so proud of me
I can’t imagine teaching those classes for an entire year
Today I happened to have another ESE class, but they had a test scheduled so it was actually easy, and boring. But the way my day started out was kind of interesting. Earlier in the week I took a walk with who I thought was the substitute coordinator for the school. He got me some paper for my class and listened as I told him about my background (some subbing, programmer for a few years .. just sent in my paperwork for my temp. cert .. etc) I was just rattling on, making conversation. Turns out he wasn’t just a sub coordinator, but a dean, an administrator and basically the jack of all trades in the school. When I checked in today, I had a strange classroom on my schedule that turned out to be a tech lab. I hung out there, nosing around in projects and looking at trophies. They had lego robotic setups, strange little cars built out of all kinds of material .. half the class looked like a shop class, the other have a regular classroom. Anyways, he ended up coming to the room and when I told him I couldn’t find any sub plans, he said that I was there as a ‘meet and greet’ he actually scheduled me to meet with another teacher who teaches what I’d be certified to teach .. so of course I jumped to conclusions and twittered away thinking it was a job possibility
Once I got to talking to the other teacher she just wanted to pick my brain. She has a competition coming up where the challenge is to build a website, but neither she, or her students know HTML .. so they’re learning together. I listened to her project and gave her some tips .. I hung out for 2 classes. So it looks like I might come in and help her students after school learn some of the basics of building a website for this competition. Which is still pretty cool in my book
She also has a digital photography competition in the future .. she was seriously excited that we were introduced .. and to be honest I am too
I think it could be alot of fun to help teach kids about things I really know, even if its volunteering.
But the real bottom line is that there is an administrator who knows my skills and background, recognized that their school needed that help, and put me in touch with that teacher who was ridiculously happy to meet somebody like me. It just makes me feel like that school really likes me and wants to keep me around
And eventhough the classes I taught this week were not just mentally draining, but physically too (literally on my toes all day long) .. it was a really good week. Now I’m going to bundle up for Jason’s bonfire. I should have pics this weekend
Last October I found out about a fundraiser for our local humane society, a walk for the animals. There was a vendor / market place and I was totally psyched to get a booth to promote Furry Foto, but then I realized I had less then a week to prepare. So I scrapped that event, but made them promise to email me when they start planning next year’s event.
Well .. turns out they’re having a Mardi Gras themed walk this March! So I need some creative marketing ideas! Angelle especially, since you know some Mardi Gras traditions. I’m trying to decide if I should have some beads made up like you had at your wedding, or maybe some coins if I can get them printed with my info. I’d really like something I could pass out with a discount code, besides the usual business cards. Of course I could do Moo cards, but I’m just curious what else might be out there
I’m also going to need more samples .. so free pet sessions for friends! Just let me know if you’re interested, We’ll set something up in February. And I’ll probably have you guys vote or something on what images I should blow up
If you couldn’t tell .. I’m totally excited for this!
I was substituting for a 5th grade today, and while they were writing down their homework I realized I had a huge craving to help somebody with their homework. Sitting at the dining room table, going through math problems, helping with a science fair project .. I really have fond memories of working with my parents .. eventhough I was a terrible procrastinator and I’m sure I drove them absolutely crazy with my late night reports
I huge part of me really hopes Liz and Ella will be living closer by the time Ella is bringing home homework.
So today I decided to make the investment and re-apply for my teacher certificate in computer science. This year with all the budget cuts, I know I wont be getting full time employment anytime soon. But the temporary certificate is good for 3 years, anywhere in the state. If President Obama can actually make changes with our education system, and build new schools, and employ more teachers, I figure I’ll be ready. Plus doing this now means if there are any job fairs this spring or summer, I’ll be able to join the hunt. We’ll see how this all plays out.
Ok .. lets try this again
[This list] expired last August .. and the last thing on the list is to start another one. It was really tough coming up with 101 things the first time, so this might be a progressive list. The first 33 are from my original list. I’ll just add on any new things as I think them up. Feel free to leave comments of anything you think I should add on
Also if you want to make your own list [click here] .. I like to go through the other lists for inspiration for my list
The Mission:
Complete 101 preset tasks in a period of 1001 days.
The Criteria:
Tasks must be specific (ie. no ambiguity in the wording) with a result that is either measurable or clearly defined. Tasks must also be realistic and stretching (ie. represent some amount of work on my part).
Why 1001 Days?
Many people have created lists in the past – frequently simple goals such as New Year’s resolutions. The key to beating procrastination is to set a deadline that is realistic. 1001 Days (about 2.75 years) is a better period of time than a year, because it allows you several seasons to complete the tasks, which is better for organising and timing some tasks such as overseas trips or outdoor activities.
My 1001 Day Project ends on Saturday, October 15, 2011

I decided today that I should really go back to my old favorite recipes and repost them with pictures, and perhaps make a printable version of the recipe (pdf) .. we’ll see if I make it to that. Anyways, beef stew is a favorite of our family during cold snaps .. and this stew seriously rocks. It does take some effort though, but its soo worth it.
Long time no post! I’ve seriously slacked this year .. sorry ’bout that. Its not like I’ve been super busy .. well I kinda have, but I’m always at the computer and should make time to post a picture or two of what’s going on with me. When friends have told me they want to start blogging, I always tell them to blog often, even if its about nothing, because if you wait, you wont know where to start, you’ll have too much to share
So that’s where I am .. where to start .. ? I guess I’ll update my resolutions .. how are they going? Well I have a bunch of celery in the crisper in its originally packaging, the dogs were walked twice since the 1st of the year, and I’ve been on my computer all morning .. in bed .. because its cold. No seriously .. its like 55 degrees here in Florida! Ugh! I’ve been keeping up with my bag resolution .. basically because Publix is the only store I’ve really gone to in the past 2 weeks
Hey .. I’ve got a whole year to get these resolutions started, right? I mean they’re more like guidelines anyways!
So what have I been doing? I started the new year off with some marketing for my photography business. Yesterday I sent out thank you cards to all my 2008 clients with moo cards in them that feature a few favorite shots. The idea being that if they liked their pictures, they’ll want to show them off to friends and then my contact info is on the back. The entire project was less then $100 and if I book one session from it.. it will be totally worth it. I also put up a design on FurryFoto.com, my pet photography site. I could use some models for that site. I might need to host a free photo day at one of the local dog parks or something. Anyways the photography biz is growing, slowly .. but it is growing
Next up .. for christmas my mom and dad got us an invisible fence to keep the dogs from running away. Last week I started the process of laying out the wire, hooking it up and testing it. But when I got to the task of burying it I burned out quickly. I did about 100 feet and finished for the day, fully intending to finish up on Sat or Sun .. but of course I was sore as hell from all that work, and by monday something in my back went out of whack. Tuesday night was so bad that I actually took a pain killer I had from when my cat attacked me 4 years ago (I dont think it worked anyways) .. but today I’m soo much better. I’m considering taking up the task of digging the trench again, but I have a sub job tomorrow and the last thing I want is to have to deal with middle schoolers and killer back pain at the same time.
How’s the family? Well .. yesterday was my mom’s 60th birthday! Seriously she does not look 60 to me
Apparently liz made her a purple cake and dad brought her home some lobsters .. a perfect meal for my mom. Next week (the 22nd) is Liz’s birthday, so I’m planning a visit to south florida sometime next week. Liz leaves for washington dc on saturday and depending on if my mom needs help with ella or not, I’ll either be heading down before tuesday (dont want to miss the inauguration) or closer to the 22nd. Yes, if you haven’t read liz’s blog lately .. her boss has been invited to perform at the native american ball, so she’s going to an inauguration ball! And .. President Elect Obama is scheduled to make an appearance! She’ll be working back stage the whole time, but that means she might have a good chance in getting to see him .. live .. upclose & in person .. like .. holy cow! Needless to say she’s super excited
This post needed a picture .. here’s one of Ella that liz took last week. The rest are on her blog, its from her legwarmer shoot
Now that you’re all caught up .. I promise to try to update more often. I’m trying to start cooking again, so I have more recipes to share. And I’ve been taking pictures .. mostly of the dogs .. but as I go through them I’ll share the good ones
I rang in the New Year playing some poker at the Konickis’. I just got a mini cookie cutter set for Christmas, and they happened to have the 4 suits, so I whipped up a batch of poker cookies
