The Great Photo Storage Debate

As you all know .. I have lots of photos .. lots and lots of personal and professional photos and I’m always looking for ways to protect them .. Last year I was all about Flickr .. but their interface leaves alot to be desired .. Kodak Gallery has always been a favorite for most of my friends .. but Kodak is canceling that service .. which means a few of you will be looking for other places to store your full resolution images in a place where your friends and families can see them .. and order prints ..

I’m going to investigate Picasaweb again .. I’ve used it off and on .. I think I chose flickr over picasa last time I had this debate because flickr offered tagging and geolocation .. but it looks like Picasa has implemented those as well as other new features that make me want to give it a second chance ..

Give me a few weeks and I’ll let you know how it goes :) All of you out there looking for a replacement for your Kodak Gallery, please let me know what you have found .. thanks!

[UPDATE] – I realized that Kodak Gallery is still an okay place to store & share your photos .. they added a new ‘share on facebook’ feature .. but they dont really give you a page like the classic kodak gallery did that lists all your albums .. their new slide show is much faster then the old method though .. its nicely done.

Geeking Out

For the first time in months, I’m updating this blog. Working and traveling as much as I have lately I haven’t taken the time to update this site. I have however updated Twitter & Facebook .. so today I’ve been researching ways to tie those two sites into this blog here .. so that I can feel like there’s a purpose of having this site ..

I’ve come across a few plugins that you may want to check out:

Fotobook – Fotobook downloads your albums from Facebook and adds them to a page on your wordpress blog. You can see my album [here].

Next up .. twitter .. I already had a twitter widget that posts my updates in my sidebar .. but since I’m not really writing full blog posts right now .. I decided to find something that will download my ‘tweets’ and post them. [Twitter Tools] by Alex King makes this really simple. It has a bunch of tools besides what I was looking for, including a sidebar widget, a twitter update box in the dashboard and it will update twitter when you post a new blog post (all easily turned off or on).

I’m still looking for a way to consolidate my facebook and flickr photos .. maybe I’ll have to move my flickr photos to facebook .. will let you know if I find anything good ..

UPDATE: Last night I discovered [flickr copy] a facebook application that copies photos you have on flickr and puts them onto facebook. I tried with on of my ‘sets’ and it was flawless :) Now I can keep my high resolution images on flickr and have a way to share them on facebook.

RSS Woes

This private RSS feed issue has been driving me crazy. I’ve found a few work arounds .. including one that I posted in the private area of my blog but have since taken it down. Why? Here’s the deal .. say you translated the feed and then put it into your google reader. Well the service uses Yahoo Pipes to handle the authentication. So .. if I made a new post, then it could take hours for Yahoo Pipes to refresh, and then time for Google Reader to refresh .. well you’re looking at getting an RSS update like 6 hours after I make the post. Some people wouldn’t care .. but I sure do. I like my news fresh :) Also, if you converted my feed, and then plugged it into a reader like bloglines, which I read actually re-publishes the feeds you subscribe to through it, that would mean anybody could end up reading your feed anyways. Also, your private entries would be visible in search results .. which is what I’m trying to avoid.

Then today on LifeHacker they had an article on boosting your RSS efficiency. Sweet! In there I found an article about NewsGator/NetNewsWire/FeedDemon. I visited their site 2 days ago when I was looking for ways to use HTTP Auth feeds, but honestly, I couldn’t find anything on their site. Especially because I didn’t know what I was looking for. When I went to their products page it had a listing of categories .. and well I thought they were product names for purchase and I really want something free. Thanks to the LifeHacker & Web Worker Daily articles I found out that their feed readers are actually free and where to find them. So I downloaded NetNewsWire (mac), created a News Gator account and downloaded the iPhone application and imported my RSS feeds from Google Reader. That part was simple .. everything loaded fine, all my feeds are in the same categories like in Google Reader and now .. I totally have access to the protected feed for my site. Supposedly all the applications will keep my feed subscription list in sync. Bonus, I even found the subscribe link for my toolbar (so handy if you stumble across something new you like).

Great .. fantastic  .. awesome ..

Except .. there’s no iGoogle homepage widget for NewsGator yet :( My Google Reader widget is the #1 way I’m used to getting my feeds. When I open my browser or hit the home button, there they are just waiting for me to see if there’s anything new. So that sucks :\ I’m sure I could adapt to keeping NetNewsWire in my Dock .. but I really like the widget. Oh well.

Also .. I’ve been searching for a way to read private bloggers feeds for years now .. and I still have no solutions to report. Basically if you set your blogger acct to private, your feed will no longer work. I’m sure its a security precaution .. I’ve learned that there is always a way to make an http auth feed public.

Bottom line? If you have to get your private feed fix, try the News Gator applications, I’m going to stick with them for now. Also .. Blogger stinks, but I understand. And if some genius happens upon this silly little blog post, please invent some way to secure RSS feeds :) That is all.

Role Scoper 101

So I’ve played with role scoper most of the day today .. and I’m pretty sure I can give you a quick and dirty breakdown on how to start privatizing parts of your blog. I’m going to assume that you 1, have wordpress and 2, know how to install plugins. And with that, go download, install and activate [role scoper].

Now you can start writing private posts! Go ahead and start a new post. On the right hand side of the Add New Post screen, make sure you change your Visibility to Private (not Password Protected or Public) in the Publish box. This will make sure that your posts will remain private if something happens to the role scoper plugin. Then scroll to the bottom of the page, you’ll see 3 boxes from the Role Scoper plugin called Readers, Contributors, and Editors. I only use the Readers box and ignore other other two because I’m the only Contributor and Editor for my site. To restrict the post to certain people click the “Restrict for Post (only selected users/groups are Readers)” checkbox at the top of the Readers box. Click the Users text link next to the Groups tag to bring up a list of your site’s users (I’ll get back to groups in a minute). Then write your post, tags, select your categories and click the Publish button and you’re all done! Easy huh?

Say you have a group of ‘Friends’ who you dont mind having access to a post. Create a group by going to Users > Groups. Type in a name for your group and select your subscribers that you want in that group and click Create. Now if you want a whole group to have access to a post follow the directions as above, but instead of selecting Users, just select your group :) Make sure you’re clicking the ‘Restrict’ checkbox at the top of the Readers box.

Now, to restrict an entire category! For example, I’d like to hide all my subbing posts so that only my ‘Friends’ can read them. Go create a category, I suggest you make new categories for your private posts, otherwise you risk people realizing an old category has disappeared.

First you’ll need to restrict the category in role scoper. This will hide the category and posts by default to everybody. Click Restrictions > Category. Either click the name of your category in the list at the top, or scroll down until you find your category. Then make sure you click the ‘Private Post Reader’ and ‘Post Reader’ checkboxes for the category you want to hide. Now, scroll back up to the top, make sure you select ‘Restrict Selected Categories’ in the first drop box, then decide if you want to restrict this category, the subcategories or both the main category and the subcategories. So far .. I’ve always selected “for selected category and sub-categories”, because I want to make sure if I end up putting a sub category its hidden too :) Go ahead and click Update. Now nobody (but yourself) will be able to read posts that you put into your new category. So we have to go ahead and allow who you want.

Click Roles > Category. Either click the name of your category in the list at the top, or scroll down until you find your category. Click the checkboxes next to ’Private Post Reader’ and ‘Post Reader’. Scroll back to the top. Select your Assignment mode (again I’ve been using “Assign for selected and sub-categories”), you’ll notice that “Remove” is at the bottom of the list, you’ll select that if you want to remove permissions to a category. Click checkboxes next to groups or users that you want to have access to all posts in your selected category. Click Update, and you’re all done! If you create a new post and put it in your restricted category .. only those groups you gave permission to will see it.

A couple of issues …

  • If you use the_category in your template, and you tag a public post with a private category .. that category will show to everybody. But if a user clicks it who doesn’t have access .. it will bring up a 404 page (they wont be able to see whats in that category, might just think its an error).
  • RSS feed will become http://domain.com/feed/?http_auth=1 (if you have permalinks on) and will show private posts that the user has permission to view. However .. Google Reader and Safari do not currently support HTTP Authorized feeds. But if you click the RSS link in Firefox, it will show up as a live bookmark with the private posts .. so I know it works. If you have an RSS reader that does support HTTP Auth feeds that you trust (and works for Mac as well as PC)
  • If you tag a private post, it might show up in the tag cloud, but if you click the tag it wont show private posts unless you have access. I haven’t experimented with this enough to be able to tell you if a tag used exclusively in private posts will show up in a public tag cloud.

Finally, Role Scoper has their own [usage guide] which is much more detailed, and may have better ways to do what I described above.

So far I’m pretty happy with this plugin and how transparent it seems to be.

Going Private

For awhile now .. there have been times where I’ve censored a blog post because I didn’t know who might read it. Especially lately, when I have lots of stories about substituting, not that anything is inappropriate .. but I’d like to be able to bitch or celebrate about jobs without worrying that one day my very public blog will come up if somebody googles my name. The catch is .. that most of the time I don’t care who reads my posts. Especially I post like this one which will have some technical suggestions that might help somebody who I’ve never met before. Also .. I like RSS readers, it drives me crazy when somebody I really like goes private on Blogger and don’t get RSS updates anymore.

So part of this site will be going private, most of you probably wont notice .. but if you want to make sure you’re getting all my updates go [create an account] for my site now :) If you made an account in the past (like in the last 3 years) it should still be there .. there’s a link to [recover your password] on the [login form].  Also, if for some reason I don’t personally know you, I’d love for you to introduce yourself, send me an email or a comment so that I make sure to give you access.  Also .. that means that sometimes when you visit my site, you’ll have to check to see if you’re logged in. Over in my sidebar you’ll see a link to Log in (or if you’re already logged in, you’ll see Log out). As of 2/23/09 the sidebar is on the left side of the page, the  Log in / Log out link is under the title Meta.

Angelle and Mike emailed me last week asking if I knew of some sort of solution to be able to mask parts of a blog, allowing certain people or groups access to private entries or categories, which is exactly what I’ve wanted to do for a long time now. WordPress has built in roles, or a way to control access to your blog, but they really only pertain to allowing people to edit and post to your blog, not really for managing your subscribers (or readers) After a bit of research I believe I have found a way to do it through wordpress with the help of a plugin called [Role Scoper]. Role Scoper allows you to set controls for subscribers to your blog. It also does alot of other fancy stuff for blogs that have multiple authors, editors .. etc. none of which I’m interested in right now. I’m planning on writing up a Role Scoper 101 post this afternoon, once I iron out how I’m going to make it work for me :) For now .. just go ahead and create an account for my blog so that I can use you all as guinea pigs!

Twitter 101

I was introduced to this video a few months ago .. and have been passing it around to anybody who’s all like “what’s the point?”

Twitter in Plain English from leelefever on Vimeo.

Its really easy to keep up with updating twitter too, you can [add your cell phone] in your twitter account preferences which will allow you to post updates by texting to 40404. There’s a fantastic plugin for firefox called [TwitterFox]. TwitterFox actually has a little popup on your firefox browser when a friend sends an update, or you can enlarge the window to see the last few updates. If you have facebook, you can add an [app for facebook] that when you update twitter, it will update your facebook status. Its still buggy though, I had a few updates last week that didn’t make it to my facebook status. And one of the most useful twitter programs I use is the [Twitter Gadget] widget I have on my iGoogle home page. One of these days I’m going to post about my iGoogle homepage, because it freaking rocks, but for now .. you can check it out for yourself :)

Also this weekend I found out that some celebrities honestly update twitter, and its neat .. and makes them seem so .. normal .. Check out Rainn Wilson, Martha Stewart, Ashton Kutcher, John Mayer, Soleil Moon FryeRichard Branson .. go through the lists of people they follow to find more :)  Oh and Dave Matthews, who I actually ended up taking off my follow list because he updates alot, and its hard to follow .. but still really cool :)

Oh! Of course you can [follow me] too :)

More of my favorite iPhone apps

Weightbot: I picked up this app thinking I’d give it a try to start tracking my weight, and even though I’ve only updated it 3 times since I got it last month, it turns out I’ve lost 7lbs. I’ve actually lost 2 lbs since Wednesday. It has a neat graph if you tilt it on its side and calculates your BMI when you enter your weight. Super simple to update, I just don’t like to get on the scale very often :P

Allrecipes.com Dinner Spinner: I LOVE allrecipes.com .. and I used to surf their site while walking through the grocery store looking for inspiration for dinner. Now I can narrow down things I’m looking for, or just let it randomly choose something for me. You shake it to pick a recipe for you .. how fun is that :)

Virtual Zippo: Who doesn’t like playing with zippo lighters .. at least this one wont leave your fingers smelling like lighter fluid and ash.

My Favorite iPhone Apps

I know there are so many people out there sharing their favorite iPhone applications, I figured I’d let you know mine. I still have last year’s version, not the new 3G, but it has the same software as the 3G.

Solitaire City – This is my #1 time killer .. at the dog park, at dr. appts, waiting for my car to get serviced .. it comes in really handy. Plus its kinda awesome to see how you’re ranked in the world (resets daily).

midomi – I am totally addicted needing to know the titles of songs on TV or commercials that catch my attention. Midomi can actually find songs by you singing/humming them, by putting your phone upto a speaker or a few other ways. I have one song that I fell in love with at the Post Secret exhibit, and recently I heard it featured in a Olympic / Special Olympic commercial from Coke. I tried out midomi and it found the song right away - Breathe Me by Sia

Flashlight – I always use my phone for a flashlight around the house, this will keep the screen a solid white until you decide to turn it off :)

Twitterific – I love twitter, and this makes it easy to add an iPhone photo to a twitter update, as well as your location and other neat little features.

Weatherbug – If only they could animate their radar .. I would be in heaven!

Anyways .. if you’re thinking about an iPhone .. do it! You wont be disappointed :)

TODO Lists

Anybody out there using an online todo list? Last fall I signed up to Remember the Milk after reading some favorable articles on Lifehacker (one of my favorite sites). Anyways I signed up, then ever logged in again :) Today I decided to give it a shot, and see if it can help me get things going around here. I’ll let you know if it does anything for me.

Here’s a long article about using Remember the Milk for advanced purposes: [click here]
